Republicans in Tight Races Increasingly Call for an End to the Iran War
A growing number of Republicans facing competitive elections are breaking with President Donald Trump and calling for an end to the war with Iran, as the conflict weighs on voters' budgets ahead of November.
At least 17 Republican members of Congress and candidates for Senate or governor have now publicly urged the president to wind down the conflict, which began at the end of February.
Who is speaking out
- Mike Rogers, the GOP Senate candidate in Michigan, said the war needs to end and argued energy costs would fall sharply.
- Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for governor in Wisconsin, said it is time for the United States to exit Iran.
- Ohio Sen. Jon Husted, who is seeking a full term, said the war should end quickly to bring down gas prices.
- Ashley Hinson, running for Senate in Iowa, called for an immediate end to the fighting.
- Iowa Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, who had opposed earlier war powers resolutions, have since broken with the president on recent votes.
The pressure from voters
Diesel prices have jumped nearly 60% since the war began. In recent polling, 73% of Americans said the conflict is hurting their finances, including 59% of Republicans. The same share, 73%, disapprove of the president's handling of Iran, and 67% disapprove of his overall job performance.
Congress has voted on 20 war powers resolutions since the fighting started, and some Republicans have joined Democrats on five of them.
