Sen. Mark Kelly: Democrats Have to 'Do a Better Job' Before Midterms

Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona said Sunday that Democrats need to "do a better job" if they want to win in November, urging his party to focus on passing legislation and getting bills to the president's desk.

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Kelly predicted strong voter turnout and described many of this year's races as competitive. He argued that Americans are struggling with the cost of living and that Republicans have not offered convincing answers.

Criticism of the Iran war

Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and astronaut, was sharply critical of the administration's approach to the war with Iran. He said the president has not laid out clear strategic goals, a plan, a timeline or an exit strategy. The senator tied the conflict, along with the administration's tariffs, to rising costs for American families.

On the Strait of Hormuz, Kelly noted that the waterway was open before the fighting began and pointed to the service members who have been killed or wounded since.

Skeptical of AI talks with China

Kelly also weighed in on last week's summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said the talks on artificial intelligence produced little more than a working group, and warned that the technology poses serious risks, from job losses to safety concerns, that deserve far more urgent attention.

His comments echo a debate inside the Democratic Party about how to channel voter frustration into gains in the House and Senate less than six weeks before Election Day.
