House Democrats Plan Sweeping Oversight if They Win the Majority

House Democrats are preparing an aggressive oversight agenda aimed at the Trump administration should they win control of the chamber in November, with subpoena power and, potentially, impeachment on the table.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who would be in line to become speaker, argued that alleged corruption carries a real cost for Americans and promised to hold wrongdoers accountable. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, expected to lead the Judiciary Committee, described the issues facing the panel as enormous.

A long list of targets

Committee leaders, including Reps. Robert Garcia of California on Oversight, Gregory Meeks of New York on Foreign Affairs and Jared Huffman of California on Natural Resources, have sketched out potential investigations into:

• How the Trump family's wealth and business dealings have grown since January 2025.
• Civil rights concerns in immigration enforcement and deportations.
• The conduct of the Iran war and military operations involving Venezuela.
• The closure of the Kennedy Center and funding for the America at 250 celebrations.
• The shutdown of agencies such as USAID and the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
• The Department of Health and Human Services under Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Impeachment on the table

Democrats say impeaching the president is possible but far from certain, and that Cabinet officials are more likely targets. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth already faces articles of impeachment introduced by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. The president was impeached twice in his first term and acquitted by the Senate both times.

Democrats are already laying groundwork through letters to agencies and court filings, which they say will serve as a road map if they gain the gavel.
